Scientific Developer

Job description

In partnership with Blue Green Vision, we are enhancing our RGB based vision system with NIR cameras. Using a pragmatic scientific approach, we want to fuse and combine information coming from both devices in order to increase the accuracy of our waste detection system. Working alongside the CTO you will be responsible for developing the system that is connected with the physical device. You will build the components that will annotate the outcome of our ML model with the data from the NIR system. This role suits someone who likes to deal with realtime systems and likes programming close to the hardware. Due to the hands-on nature of this role, we are looking for who is happy to come into the office (near Paddington) at least 2 days per week.

A typical day in this role looks like:

  • Designing and developing low level & high level components in C++ on Linux that return classifications of items seen by the camera

  • Building & maintaining a CI/CD pipeline that integrates your components with the rest of the system

  • Adopting a pragmatic, scientific approach to experimentation

  • Collaborating with the AI team to fuse the data

  • Interacting with the rest of the engineering team about the way components are integrated

  • Working in an agile environment with two week sprints

Job requirements

  • 5+ years experience in C++/Linux/Hardware components

  • Demonstrable experience with real-time programming, coming from a computer science, physics or hardware background

  • Familiar with microcontrollers (ideally Atmega/Arduino/Matlab)

  • Capability to solder DIY PCBs

  • Experience in ROS is a plus

  • Passion for addressing the waste crisis or other environmental issues

  • Travel into the office (Westbourne Park, London) at least 2 days a week

About Greyparrot:

The world is in a waste crisis. Currently we produce 2.1 billion tons of solid waste per year. Data collection of the waste we produce is non-existent, meaning no systematic transparency and no accountability. It means that recycling targets are not upheld, dumping of waste into our oceans remains nobody's responsibility, recyclables get sent to landfill or incineration, and producers get away with sub-standard packaging. Thus, recycling rates stubbornly remain at 10% and, unless we change, by 2040 the plastic stock in the ocean will have quadrupled - a problem that already costs society $1.5 trillion each year.

Our mission at Greyparrot is to digitise waste to increase transparency and efficiency in recycling by providing data analytics to sorting centres, packaging producers and regulators. Currently, our camera system and AI software are deployed in recycling plants and waste facilities around the world to measure material flows and provide waste analytics. We have compiled a team of experts to deploy our technology and we’re looking to expand our team.

On offer:

  • Competitive London-based salary (salary band available upon application)

  • Employee stock option scheme

  • Customised hybrid working between office and home

  • 25 days holiday each year, plus bank holidays

  • Paid sick leave for physical and mental health needs

  • Enhanced maternity, paternity, adoption or shared parental leave

  • Ability to have a real impact on addressing the waste crisis

A few things to note:

  • Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

  • We are 100% committed to building a diverse and representative team. Whatever your race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability - we want to hear from you.

  • If you don’t quite match everything above but you feel you can succeed in this role, please still apply.

  • No recruiters please.
